Grip on FND: online module for patients after diagnose
- news
Summary
When dealing with a functional neurological disorder (FND), it can be helpful to fully understand and accept the diagnosis. This can help you to manage your symptoms better and, in some cases, support your recovery. However, many people with FNS still receive insufficient or unclear explanations. The online module “Grip on FND” is designed to provide support in this area. The module can help you better understand what FND is, accept the diagnosis, and explore which treatment is best suited for you.
A bridge between diagnose and treatment
The module is designed for adults who have been diagnosed with FND. It allows people to absorb information at their own pace, whenever and wherever it suits them. The module is not intended to replace treatment. However, it does something that is often just as important: it helps people understand what is going on and prepares them for treatment.
The module is well-suited for use after a diagnosis has been made by a neurologist, for example through the POH-GGZ (mental health practice nurse) or in mental health care, during waiting periods, or as preparation for a treatment plan.

Information tailored to each individual
The module consists of four parts:
- an explanation of FNS and its symptoms
- insight into the causes of FNS, including an explanation based on the biopsychosocial model
- information about treatment options
- practical tips for coping with FNS
Because FNS can vary greatly from person to person, users can select which information to consult in each section to ensure it is well-suited to their needs. Additionally, the information can be read or listened to.
An important component is the personal overview that people create themselves. In this overview, they identify which risk factors, triggers, and maintaining factors may have played a role in the onset and persistence of their symptoms, categorized into biological, psychological, and social factors. This not only helps provide greater insight into the condition but can also assist in preparing for treatment.
Co-created with patients, professionals and researchers
The module was developed by physician-researcher Marleen Bracke, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team consisting of neurologist Jeannette Gelauff, psychiatrist Sonja Rutten, psychologists Mayke Mol and Rosa Boeschoten, and experts by experience Manouk van de Klundert, Quinty Hartendorp, and Chloé Calis.
This collaboration is reflected in the content: medically sound, yet written in a relatable and understandable way. Throughout the module, there are videos in which the experts by experience share their stories and experts provide explanations and advice. With text, audio, videos, and animations, the module caters to different learning and processing styles.
Research shows improved understanding, acceptance and satisfaction
The module was evaluated in a pilot study involving 31 people with a recent FND diagnosis. They completed questionnaires, and some participated in a focus group. The results show that, after completing the module, participants had a better understanding of the diagnosis and were better able to accept it.
This was mainly due to the recognition and validation found in the descriptions of symptoms and the stories of peer experts, as well as the explanation of the biopsychosocial model combined with the creation of a personal overview. Satisfaction levels are also high: participants gave the module a recommendation score of 9 out of 10.
In addition, there was an improvement in perceived health, but no clear changes were observed in symptoms, daily functioning, and quality of life.
A valuable addition to existing FND care, not a replacement
A clear explanation of a diagnosis is an essential part of care, especially when dealing with a complex condition like FND. The “Grip on FND” module is not a treatment in itself, but a valuable supplement to it. This is particularly true during the period between diagnosis and treatment, when questions and uncertainty are often high.
The module is available via the Minddistrict platform for healthcare providers and their patients.
