In recent years, Denmark has demonstrated how digital innovation can bring about lasting change in healthcare. The country is doing pioneering work, particularly in the field of digital mental health care. With a strong digital infrastructure, the rapid development of numerous telemedicine solutions and a high level of acceptance among the population, Denmark has created a system that serves as a role model.
A nationwide digital care model
At the heart of this initiative is the Centre for Digital Psychiatry in the southern region of Denmark. This is where the online clinic ‘Internetpsykiatrien’ was developed, offering evidence-based therapies for depression and anxiety disorders – free of charge, without long waiting times and without referral. It is complemented by the Mindhelper platform, which offers early support and promotes a culture of self-care.
These initiatives have established the Centre for Digital Psychiatry as a hallmark for digital mental health in the country.
A data-driven approach made it possible to roll out these models nationwide. Today, patients can apply themselves and start treatment within 30 days, after an assessment. With this approach, Denmark has not only reduced waiting times, but also provided convenient access to care to underserved populations.
