Not less but better - Strengthening Digital Literacy

Under the banner of “not less but better,” the content of the new self-help modules helps users manage their online time in a more mindful and healthy way. Through short, practical text-based or audio-based exercises, participants learn to use their smartphones and other digital devices in a more reflective way. The goal is to develop a self-directed approach to using these devices.

  • Adults, youth
  • Module, self-help
  • Suitable for the app

Who are the modules intended for?

The modules are designed for people who want to change their smartphone habits to improve their well-being. Some modules are available for ages 14 and up, while others are available only for ages 18 and up. The “For Parents” module is also available in the catalogue for related persons.

How can the modules be used?

The modules are designed as self-help modules so that they can be selected independently based on needs and interests. They can be used independently of one another. All modules are structured as a 10-day program - each chapter corresponds to a daily exercise. An exercise lasts between 5 and 15 minutes and is designed to be interactive in either audio or text format.

What is the content of the modules?

The modules provide knowledge about how smartphones and digital media work. The exercises draw on mindfulness-based and body-oriented methods. Topics such as the underlying needs, beliefs, impulse control, internal and external triggers, personal values, and “offline alternatives” are addressed. In addition, practical concepts such as the habit loop, flow state, friction, and the Pomodoro Technique are introduced and applied through low-threshold exercises. Daily tasks encourage users to apply what they’ve learned in everyday life and build new habits around it.

Three modules of the series are already available to use:

  • Healthy Smartphone Habits
  • Digital Mindfulness
  • Social Media

These modules will be released soon:

  • Binge Watching
  • Work in Flow
  • Online Dating
  • For Parents

What are these modules based on?

The content of these self-help modules is based on the app “not less but better” from the company Wellspent.  The scientifically grounded training program was examined in a study by Freie Universität Berlin and demonstrated positive effects on problematic smartphone use. The modules combine approaches from behavioural psychology with micro-exercises that ensure the daily learning units fit seamlessly into everyday life.
